Zombie Kittens Card Game Review

Zombie Kittens
Designer: Unstable Games
Players: 2-5
Playtime: 15 minutes
Ages: 7+

Zombie Kittens by Unstable Games is a spooky twist on their wildly popular Exploding Kittens card game. In this version, the chance to come back from the dead gives players an extra shot at staying in the game. Like its predecessor, Zombie Kittens is quick to learn, fast-paced, and filled with unpredictable moments that keep everyone on edge.

What’s in the Box?

  • 61-card Zombie Kittens deck
  • Rules sheet

Setup

Setup varies depending on the number of players:

  • For our 3-player game, we used 33 cards and 3 Zombie Kitten cards.
  • For 2 players, 24 cards are used.
  • For 4-5 players, all cards are included.

We began by removing the cards with paw prints from the deck (used in larger games) and shuffled the remaining 33 cards. Each player received 7 cards, plus their powerful Zombie Kitten card, which can revive them if they “die” by drawing an Exploding Kitten card. The deck was shuffled again, with one fewer Exploding Kitten card than the number of players (in our case, two Exploding Kittens).

Gameplay

On a player’s turn, they can:

  • Play: Place cards face up and follow the instructions, or
  • Pass: Play no cards.

At the end of each turn, players must draw one card. If it’s an Exploding Kitten, they can either play their Zombie Kittencard to stay in the game, or die and sit out unless revived. The game continues clockwise until only one player is left alive.

Objective

The goal is simple: Be the last player standing. As the rulebook explains: β€œIf you explode, you die. If you don’t explode, you win.” All other cards in the deck are designed to reduce your chances of drawing an Exploding Kitten, making each turn a suspenseful draw.

Final Thoughts

As a fan of party games, I had a blast with Zombie Kittens. The added twist of being able to come back after “dying” makes it feel fresh compared to Exploding Kittens. The ability to combine this deck with others from the Exploding Kittens series also adds versatility and expands gameplay possibilities. Overall, this game is a silly, lighthearted pick with fun artwork that had us laughing all night. It’s a perfect fit for any casual game night.
